Review by Nick Anning: The latest, and most impressive volume in the ongoing "Kangaroo & Map" series by Greg Pope has just been released.
Running to more than 350pp, and printed entirely in colour, this is by far Pope's most ambitious project to date.
On this occasion Greg Pope has collaborated with two other leading collectors - David Adams from England and Bill Bell from Canada - and the results are quite spectacular.
Several important "Kangaroo" works by serious philatelists have been published in the past. This is by far the most exhaustive, with every aspect from the 1d stamp's development and design through to its use on postal stationery being fully developed and exhaustively illustrated.
The major part of the work is devoted to identifying, classifying and plating the enormous number of plate flaws that make collecting the Penny Roo such a challenging and consuming occupation. The combination of Pope's grid overlays (or "sector layouts") and his high quality colour illustrations - many of them enlarged 300% or more - provide the collector with the highest level of assistance available. |
