Review by Nick Anning: Anyone wishing to collect New Hebrides stamps or postal history should have this reference in their library if they wish to avoid the inclusion of faked or forged stamps and postcards in their collection. This book not only lists and illustrates in colour some the many fakes known but will give the collector a good ‘feel’ for identifying suspicious items, reinforcing the old adage “If it is too good to be true it normally is”.
Dealing almost exclusively with overprints, postmarks and contrived covers, collectors will be able to potentially recoup the cost of this book many times by being armed with the knowledge on how to spot faked overprints, common dates on forged cancels - including “Madame Joseph” cancels – and contrived covers.
This book does not claim to list all known examples of fakes and forgeries. However those who are not experts in the field will gain a good grounding on what to look out for from this publication. The “New Hebrides Cancellation Study” by Phillips, Crompton & Holland available from this website will also make a very useful companion to this book listing genuine cancels from 1892 - 1980.
