Review by Nick Anning: This may be the most important philatelic book published in 2005. Most collectors know that high value British Commonwealth stamps are often worth more used than mint. Madame Joseph is infamous for providing a service to London dealers to convert mint high values into "used" with a wide array of forged datestamps of exceptional quality. It is a fair bet that any collection of used British Empire will contain examples of this dear "lady's" work. Many collectors and, sadly, dealers have buried their heads in the sand, and most will continue to do so. However, Cartwright has done us all a major service by itemising and illustrating impressions of every Madame Joseph concoction. No more will ignorance be an excuse. The attractively and copiously illustrated hardbound main volume comes with a ring-binder full of sheets of clear acetate on which the forged postmarks have been carefully reproduced. Use this book to purge your collection of these "nasties" and to avoid adding any more in the future.
